Raised in the west when the staple for late-night television was the western, I have always been drawn to that era. At times, I still long for the fare given us by “Gunsmoke”, “Sugarfoot”, “Streets of Laredo”, and “Maverick”. Their modern counterparts in the “CSI” or “Law and Order” just don’t do it for me.
Ah, well. At least I write about what I like.
And while most of the stuff I have written in the past is purely of a normal western flavor – a la Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour – I have toyed with the idea of updating the tales with a flavor of urban fantasy and the like. It is in no way “modernizing the formula” as they do in modern tele-dramas, but more broadening the base.
I’m sure they had those sorts of problems back then as well.
Hence my first novel, Young Hellions.
Next I will find some other ways at updating the western to modern tastes.
I least, I hope it will be interesting.
